Anahid Arslanian
Painting
Anahid is a San Francisco-based artist of Armenian heritage. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute. She lived and exhibited in the famous historic Goodman Building, an artists’ community, in the early eighties. Her work has been shown and published in the West Coast since 1978. She has also exhibited Internationally (in Armenia and the Czech Republic). She embraces a style that can be called Abstract Realism or Mystical Realism. This is art that comes from the spirit, exploring the dream universe of the soul. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Artist’s Statement ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I work intuitively, from the heart, not from the head. Instead of logically planning out a painting, I let the painting tell me what it wants to be.
In this way art becomes a process of discovery and self-knowledge. I quiet my mind and listen to the small voice within, and the images flow spontaneously.
I love vibrant colors and mysterious shapes and use them to express things that words cannot express. I ask of the viewer to suspend his/her judgment instead of trying to put the art in a category, to just explore with their eyes and feelings.
I work in two distinct mediums: painting and mixed-media assemblage.
Nature is the major inspiration for my work. Other influences include World Mythology and Shamanism; Indian, Persian and Armenian Rugs and Miniature Paintings; Van Gogh and Gauguin, the Surrealists, O’Keefe, and Modern Art in general.
